DDMAC Feedback on Social Media: The Sound of Crickets is Deafening

Nearly three months have now passed since the FDA's Division for Drug Marketing Advertising and Communications (DDMAC) held its hearing entitled “Promotion of FDA-Regulated Medical Products Using the Internet and Social Media Tools.”  So far the response from DDMAC and direction provided to industry can be measured by the almost deafening sound of crickets coming from the direction of Washington DC.

Hopefully, before we're too far along into 2010, DDMAC will provide constructive guidance to industry on the use of social media to communicate with patients. They certainly had plenty of feedback from interested parties during those hearings.

I know I'm late to the game here, in terms of responding, but did you actually CALL or WRITE to DDMAC to inquire about this before writing your headline? You should have. They responded to an email of mine within 24 hours via phone and email.

While the meetings took place in the fall, they left Social Media an open topic of discussion via phone and email until the end of February. AFTER your deafening crickets.

In their quick, polite responses, the TWO people who got back to me stated they "have budget" to produce "a guidance" "this year," based in part on the input received, though they expect it may take more than one guidance to cover every aspect.

So... check your sources, and, in response to your content, start your crickets now.

Dan,

Thanks for your response. I guess we'll see whether the FDA takes action this year, and how substantive their response will be. Industry is waiting.
